In the Gospel of Matthew Jesus speaks frequently of the kingdom of heaven. In Matthew 4:17 we are told that Jesus began to preach that the kingdom of heaven is at hand. This was his central message. The kingdom of God is everywhere that God’s will is preeminent and the will of the enemy is conquered. Jesus traveled around destroying the works of the enemy and setting the captives of the enemy free.
In the Old Testament the children of Israel wondered in the wilderness for forty years without a kingdom. They were a nation, but without a territory to possess and defend and even expand they were not a kingdom. They also carried with them at this time the tabernacle; a temporary dwelling place for the presence of the Lord. In the tabernacle there was one candlestick with seven flames, the Menorah. When Israel conquered the nations about them and possessed a kingdom then God allowed them to build a Temple, a permanent dwelling place for his presence.
In the Temple God instructed Israel to have ten menorahs or candle sticks. Each menorah had seven flames so there was a total of seventy flames in the temple of the kingdom of Israel. In establishing the kingdom of heaven Jesus sent out seventy lights in Luke10:1, 17-20. The seventy lights had authority through Jesus to destroy the works of the enemy.
The kingdom of heaven is the area of authority that is controlled by God’s people. The Kingdom destroys all the works of the enemy. The nature of this world is in direct opposition to the kingdom of God and the kingdom of God has authority to overcome the nature of the world. This warfare is constant and the world seeks to oppose the kingdom of heaven. Jesus tells us in John16:33 to be of good cheer for he has overcome the world. We have victory over the system of the world through Jesus who is the Christ.
