In Genesis4:8-9 Cain kills his brother because his brother's sacrifice is accepted by God and Cain's is not. This jealousy of his brother’s acceptance and lack of willingness to do what is accepted led him to reject his natural love for his brother and murder him.
So as it was then so as it is today. Our rejection of God through the failing of offering him the true fruit of our lives always leads us to rejecting the love for our neighbor. It is true that we can't love God whom we have never seen but hate our neighbor, whom we see every day, (1stJohn4:20). It is also true that if you do not first love God you cannot truly love anyone else for everyone who loves is born of God and knows God, (1stJohn4:7).
When we ask; "Am I my brother's keeper?” we are rejecting God as well as our neighbor. Cain's worship is the religion of hate. Whenever someone fails to love God but wants to look like he loves God they have turned their back on love and the enemy replaces it with hate for their neighbor. Whenever we see religion used to kill, steal, and destroy we know that the followers of that religion are like Cain being used by the enemy.
We all have an obligation as God's creation not only to offer him the good fruit of our lives but also to love our neighbor. If we fail to do this then our relationship with God is no better than Cain’s relationship which is false and full of anger. If we seek to do and to be the love of God then and only then are we acting as God's children in the earth, (1stJohn4:10-12).
