GOD'S ORIGINAL INTENT
God told man not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Gen 2:16, 17). What is sometimes missed is that God never commanded Adam not to eat from the tree of life. God told Adam that he could eat from every tree in the garden including the tree of life. God prevented Adam from eating from the tree of life after the fall (Gen 3: 22-24). It was not God's intention for Adam to not eat from the tree of life and live forever. It was God's intention to keep Adam from living forever in his fallen state. Adam could have at any time before the fall eaten from the tree of life. It was God's original intent for man to freely choose life and therefor render the need for relying on his own human knowledge unnecessary.
ADAMS CHOICE AND OURS
If Adam had chosen life over death, the tree of life over the tree of the knowledge of good and evil he would have chosen eternal life and rejected his own reliance on his own wisdom, the wisdom that grows out of the need to navigate the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye, and the pride of life. As I mentioned previously all sin and human suffering grows out of this three pronged attack. Therefor all human philosophy and knowledge of how humans should live is only man’s attempt at navigating this three pronged attack. Today we have the same choice. Jesus gives us access to the tree of life separate from our own knowledge of how we should live. If we choose him and reject our own human knowledge of good and evil we will receive eternal life. If we either live wickedly or construct our on religion and attempt to live right based on our own knowledge of good and evil then we our repeating Adams fall.
