1st John 2:9-10 He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until
now. He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no stumbling in
him. 1st John 2:9-10 NKJV

God makes clear to us that our brother, in the context of
Christian love, is every other human being. If we try to qualify those people
worthy to receive our love we are walking in darkness and rejecting God’s light.
Remember Jesus’s lesson of the Good Samaritan. Luke 10:29-37 Jesus gives us this example of
the two religious leaders failing to show love to the man in need, and also
gives us the example of someone not held in high religious esteem choosing to
show that love. Jesus here is teaching us that your religious status or
position is nothing compared to your love in action. If we are Christians everyone
is worthy of our love because God has declared everyone worthy of his love. We cannot
pick and choose who to love because God did not pick and choose who to love. John 3:16 is one of the most quoted verses in
the Bible and tells us that God loved the world, not part of the world.
The only way the enemy of all souls is conquered is through
God’s love flowing through his people to every person in the world. Just as God
loved us even as we were still sinners and breaking his heart (Romans 5:8), we are
to show the love of God to everyone we meet. IF we are not loving our fellow
human being, but trying to justify ourselves, like the religious leader that
prompted the lesson of the Good Samaritan, then we are walking in darkness and
not in the light. It is our Christian duty to walk in the light through love.
